Call For Submissions

Divergence Press is an online, open access, peer-reviewed journal for contemporary music, published by the Centre for Research in New Music (CeReNeM) at the University of Huddersfield. Divergence Press articles are published on a rolling basis, organised around a collection of tagged ‘threads’:

  • Composition
  • Technologies
  • Performance
  • Sonic Arts & Multimedia
  • Improvisation
  • Listening & Reception
  • Audiences
  • Speculations

We are particularly interested in submissions by musicians/artists writing about their own creative practice, including texts that bridge the gap between more formal academic writing and informal blog/magazine writing. We are keen to provide a platform for artists to write about why they do what they do, as well as providing insights into their creative methods and working practices, with the aim of communicating to other practitioners, academics, and—given the online open access model—to the broader listening public.

Our online format allows for a wide range of embedded audio and video, and permits creative use of interactive and networked formats that would be impossible in traditional text-based media.

This is an open call without a deadline; selected articles will be published after they have gone through the peer review process and will be promoted through the social media platforms of CeReNeM and the University of Huddersfield Press. Please see the Guidance for Contributors, which includes submission instructions and a style guide.

As a signatory to the Keychange initiative, CeReNeM is committed to promoting gender and ethnic diversity and inclusivity across its activities and publication platforms, including Divergence Press and the HCR record label. We actively encourage submissions from and about practitioners whose gender identity and/or ethnic background is generally underrepresented in the new music community.
